Caring for the community
The Australian Public Galleries Snapshot 2020 reports that over 16.5 million people visit public art galleries each year in Australia. About 3.2 million visits are to the smaller galleries in regional Australia. There are 75 regional galleries in Queensland which collectively attract over a million visits a year. About 10% of these visits are to the Ipswich Art Gallery (IAG), which consistently achieves the highest visitation in regional Queensland with an average 100,000 visitors per annum (pre COVID-19).
The Gallery’s high level of patronage is attributable to its programming and community engagement strategies, which aim to attract the broadest possible audience through relevant, accessible and high-quality exhibitions and events. In broad terms, the Gallery’s programming falls into the following categories.
Significant Touring Exhibitions
In recent years the Gallery has presented touring exhibitions from the National Gallery of Australia, the Australian War Memorial, Questacon: The National Science Centre, The Bundanon Trust, SciTech, Sydney Living Museums to name a few. Securing exhibitions from National and State institutions is highly competitive and requires forward planning with a lead time of two to three years. These exhibitions are subsidised by Federal or State funding.
Programming for Children and Families
The Gallery is recognised for its innovative children’s exhibitions, which introduce young visitors to the creative arts through a diverse range of stimulating interactive experiences. These exhibitions ensure the Gallery is accessible to all ages and fosters intergenerational family participation. The emphasis on this area of programming reflects the growing younger population in the region and addresses the low level of gallery visitation prior to the Gallery opening in 1999.
Ipswich Cultural Heritage
A range of exhibitions highlighting aspects of the region’s rich cultural heritage are developed by the Gallery with the aim of promoting civic pride and growing audience appreciation. The diverse range of subjects explored include: coal mining, F1-11 aircraft, early potteries, motorsport in Ipswich, Brynhyfryd: the Blackstone Castle, Welsh choirs, wedding dresses, heritage homes, the five cities named Ipswich, ‘Foreigners’, and so on.
Collection
The Gallery draws from its collection of artworks and heritage items to present a range of smaller feature exhibitions and displays. The collection includes items of relatively small monetary value - for example, a small block of hardwood collected in the region and sent for exhibition in London in the mid-nineteenth century to illustrate the region’s timber resources – through to significant works of high value by famous Australian artists. These exhibits also highlight the contribution of the Gallery’s Foundation, which to date has contributed over ten million dollars to the development of the collection and the Gallery’s resources.
The Gallery’s exhibitions in the categories outlined above are developed with an emphasis on quality, innovation and audience engagement. These exhibitions enable the Gallery to:
a) contribute to the economic vitality of Ipswich Central through the attraction of cultural tourism and the retention of local cultural spend
b) generate annual revenue to off-set the Gallery’s operational costs
c) position the Gallery as Ipswich’s cultural flagship and build the city’s reputation
d) engage regional audiences with art, ideas and culture
These outcomes are carefully balanced with the Gallery’s cultural development programs which promote the work of Ipswich-based artists and contribute to community and cultural cohesion. To these ends, the Gallery develops and presents:
· an on-going program of exhibitions featuring the work of talented local artists
· the Ipswich Community Gallery, including coordination of activities and workshops
· significant exhibitions periodically which highlight outstanding local work. For example, a large 20-year survey exhibition of Lincoln Austin’s work scheduled for mid-2021
· acquisitions and commissions of work by Ipswich artists
The current Ipswich Art Gallery Exhibition Program 2020-2022 is provided for reference as Attachment A.
